Frank McGeever was a member of the Black Watch, which served in Gibraltar during the period 1940 to 1943. He provides a good account of his military service on The Rock and the type of duties he undertook. Her recalls tunnelling working parties with the Royal Engineers, which he describes as ‘hard graft’; the clearing of old cannon balls; the construction of the underground hospital and water reservoir inside the Rock with a connecting railway line, and how the spoil was used to extend the airfield. He also talks fondly of the social life in Gibraltar and its many bars, including the Trocadero (Smokey Joes). He also mentions Catalan Bay and North Front, along with the unloading of ammunition ships and the sinking of the Ark Royal.
