John Carney served as an NCO in the King’s Regiment in Gibraltar from 1936 to 1941. He recalls the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War and the impact upon Gibraltar; the incident when the Spanish destroyer, San Jose Del Rey sought refuge in Gibraltar, and attempts to recruit for the International Brigade. He also recollects the outbreak of the Second World War, construction work on extending the airstrip and attacks by the French upon The Rock. He also provides a fascinating account of life in Gibraltar.
