Amelia Tavares was born in Gibraltar, her family were from Spain. She was evacuated to London with her mother during WWII, her younger brother was born in the UK; Olegario Tavares was also evacuated from Gibraltar during the war – to London and then to Northern Ireland. He remembers Northern Ireland well and recalls the difficulty experienced by Gibraltarians who wanted to be repatriated but had no home to go to in Gibraltar.
Amelia and Olegario Tavares met in Gibraltar and subsequently settled in the UK where they still live. An interesting interview which covers evacuation, repatriation, Gibraltarian and British culture.
