Juan Candeas was born in Gibraltar in 1920; He was evacuated to London and then Northern Ireland during WWII. He describes living in a hotel in London during the Blitz. He was an excellent footballer and recalls the football leagues set up by the evacuated Gibraltarians in London. Every hotel had its own team.
He remembers life in the camp in Northern Ireland. He continued to play football in Northern Ireland and was invited to play for the local town, Ballymena. He returned to Gibraltar with his family and unfortunately his suitcase with all the football programmes and memorabilia from London and Northern Ireland was lost on the boat.
Juan Candeas recalls the difficulty in finding housing when the family returned to Gibraltar after WWII.
